Cooke family correspondence, 1819-1918.

Correspondence between members of a Danbury, Connecticut family. The bulk of the letters were written by Amos Starr Cooke, a missionary in Hawaii, to his sister Mary E. Cooke Keeler Seeley and his brother-in-law Aaron Seeley, 1831-1855. Amos Cooke described the Hawaiian islands and his pupils, recurring illnesses like measles and small pox that infected the islands, and the Hawaiian royal family, noted the births of his children, decried the Catholic influence on the natives, and instructed Aaron Seeley in managing Amos' estate in Connecticut. Also includes letters to Catharine Cooke from her sister Mary and various friends, 1819-1822, many related to religious revivals and education; family letters to Mary Seeley, 1820-1879, including missives from her sister-in-law Juliette Montague Cooke; and papers of a physical education teacher from Boonton, New Jersey, Mary Seelye Rosevear, 1916-1918.
